Buckle Up and Soar Up: Stories behind HNA Technic’s Aviation Doctors

At 12:30 on June 27, 2017, a flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou was delayed due to an emergency. Five hours later, the cause was found – Some passenger threw a handful of coins into the aircraft engine.

When you complain about a pointless long wait for your flight, someone else is enduring the scorching sun troubleshooting the causes before locating those scattered coins. Never letting a plane take off with a trace of hidden trouble is their vow.

This group of people is known as "Aviation Doctor".
Their untold stories bear sweetness and hardship.

I. Tan Kai starts his typical workday at midnight.

00:30. He receives a call from the duty room and arrives by the side of the faulty plane in no time. After a thorough checkup, he locates the failure which lies in the aircraft windshield heat strips. The windshield must be replaced on the spot.

01:00. Tan Kai arranges his staffers to print the maintenance manuals, verify the spare parts, borrow the tools, push the ladders, compose the pre-task risk analysis in order to prepare for the repair.

01:30. After the detailed work distribution for his staffers, Tan Kai begins to disassemble the windshield. Constrained in the compact cockpit, Tan Kai has to hold still during the entire process.

06:30. After more than five hours of continuous work, the windshield replacement is finally completed – Four hours ahead of schedule. Since he has been in the same position for such a long time, Tan Kai is exhausted by his stiff neck.

07:00. After the completion of the pressurization test, Tan Kai delivers the aircraft and clears it from the dock on time.

07:30. After summing up the day’s work with his team, Tan Kai finally has some time to nap in the lounge chair. As he wakes up, more difficult tasks await him.

II. Wait no more. Wei Yucheng must go home and visit his sick father.

In the face of the raging rain, he couldn’t help but wonder, “Will the plane take off smoothly?”

In the standby room, Wei Yucheng received a message stating that "System hydraulic fluid experiences massive leakage in Aircraft A. Try to resolve with the local resources.” Meanwhile, the airport radio reported a plane with mechanical failure and thus the flight was delayed. This was the same aircraft with leaking hydraulic oil.

At this time, the ground visibility was extremely low, troubleshooting staff wouldn’t be able to arrive within four hours. Terminal passengers grew restless. Wei Yucheng acted with decisiveness volunteering himself to the headquarters for immediate onsite troubleshooting. With flashlight in hand, Wei Yucheng stepped into the heavy rain.

With wheel cabin and ground both being wet, oil and water blend into each other, making it hard to tell. However, with his superb skills and meticulous logic, Wei Yucheng located the leakage, which was at the tail of the cabin. At this point, only three hours had passed since the malfunction broadcast.

"I have been with Hainan Airlines for 17 years full of love and gratitude. When incidents like this occur, I do my best to fix things. No questions asked. No strings attached. It’s part of my job.”

They are amongst thousands of crew members.
Their stories represent the countless supporting staffers
who are no less responsible or professional.
They quietly guard aircrafts’ safety and security with a strong sense of responsibility.
Rain or snow, they stand by the plane tending the parts and guarding our safety.
